Antique Victorian Buckle Ring, Hallmarked, 18ct Yellow-Gold, Size 7 3/4
The buckle motif never seems to go out of style. Popular in the 19th c. and still sought after today. This gold buckle ring, in 18ct, is from the Victorian period (hallmarked 1888).
Why is this buckle ring different from other buckle rings?
- The yellow of the gold is rich and deep with a soft glow. The same color and glow would not be seen in a comparable modern ring. It is in part due to the gold content (18ct) but also to the patina of the old gold.
- It is in lovely condition.
- Lastly, while it is substantial enough to be worn on its own, it is also perfect for stacking (with other gold ring or with diamond bands).
If you love sentimental jewelry then read about the symbolism associated with the buckle motif. It would make a lovely wedding band.
Dimensions & Details
- It is approximately US size 7 3/4 or UK P, but because it is a wide band consider sizing up 1/4 size.
- The height of the front of the band measures (at it's widest point) .45 inches or 11.mm.
- The height of the back of the band measures .19 inches or 5mm.
- The ring weighs 7.3 grams.
Origin
- England.
Period & Hallmarks
- Victorian.
- Hallmarks for Birmingham, 18ct, "o" for 1888.
Condition
- The ring is in good antique condition with general wear and surface scratches that one would expect in a piece of this age. There are a few tiny marks that may have been left from the original manufacture. One is a small pin mark on the back outside of the band that is hard to see without magnification. There are a few miniscule marks only visible on the inside of the band. We have chosen not to polish out the marks as it is possible it would change the lovely patina of the old gold. The patina would come back, but it would take time.
Symbolism in Victorian Jewelry: The Buckle
The buckle motif has been popular throughout jewelry history. It was popular during the Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian periods.
Victorian life was filled with symbolism and jewelry was no exception. A buckle symbolized fidelity in love, romantic love, a bond that could not be broken, loyalty in friendship, and love of one's family, all symbolized through the joining of the two pieces.
When the buckle wraps around a finger, like the serpent or snake, it can be interpreted as a symbol of eternal love (an unending circle or bond). The buckle is first and foremost a sentimental symbol and a love token, but it can also represent love in life or a love that has gone before but not forgotten. As such, it was also used to symbolize the loss of a loved one.
